Wykład Prof. Sarah Mercer (University of Graz, Austria): Language teacher wellbeing across the career trajectory: An ecological perspective (2 grudnia)

The Institute for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences and Humanities together with the Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts of Adam Mickiewicz University in Kalisz have the honor to invite you to the first lecture in the “IAS Invited Lecture Series in Issues in Second Language Learning and Teaching”.

Abstract: In this talk, I will report on a major three-year international study, which examined the wellbeing of language teachers (both MFL and EFL) in the UK and Austria respectively at various stages of their professional careers. I will begin by considering the theoretical nature of teacher wellbeing and its position specifically in applied linguistics’ discourse and research before turning to the study itself. The study took an ecological perspective to language teacher wellbeing acknowledging the interplay of personal and contextual factors comparing teachers’ lives across the UK and Austria in respect to diverse languages. The study considers the temporality of wellbeing and examines specifically how language teachers experience wellbeing at various stages of

their careers from pre-service to late career stage up to and including retirement. In the final part of the talk, we will discuss the practical lessons we can draw from this study and the importance of considering

how to support language teacher wellbeing within the educational system. It is hoped that the talk will provide inspiration for further research as well as practical strategies for enhancing teacher wellbeing on a personal and systemic level.
